The Associated Press, the New York Times and local news outlets reported that the Broward County Sheriff’s rescue copter was en route to a car crash when it developed mechanical issues. Video shows flames and smoke coming from the mid-section, then the tail of the craft buckled before the helicopter spun rapidly and fell onto the roof of the building, causing a fire.

Deputy Capt. Terryson Jackson, 50, was on board and died in the crash. A woman who lived in the apartment also was killed, authorities said. Four others, including the pilot and a paramedic on board were able to crawl from the wreckage and were treated for injuries. Two other people, civilians, were taken to a nearby hospital.
